Bannon, Carlson and... Liz Truss? Inside the One-Time PM's Audition for the Maga Movement

Liz Truss, began the premiere of her video series with a promise to unmask "malicious actors" attempting to weaken Britain, the US and Europe. She stated she would lay bare how an "global web of progressives operate to undermine popular rule and the public's choice."

"We will examine the political movement of Donald Trump and see how it can be replicated in Britain," Truss declared. "We will interview the key figures of the Make America Great Again campaign."

Before the show's launch, there was one particularly enthusiastic supporter. "This marks the start of a type of political shift," remarked the controversial US journalist. The right-leaning media outlet Just the News will carry the former prime minister's new podcasts.

Forging Alliances in the Maga Media Ecosystem

Compatriot supporters, including a advisor linked to Reform UK, have also helped her establish the Truss's program. The setup is adequate, if basic. The show has attracted 10,000 subscribers in her initial seven days and her premiere had tens of thousands of views across the same period.

This represents a small opening, but in making common cause with Solomon, Truss is being pushed into a mature political media sphere producing and amplifying Make America Great Again themes. Its obsessions involve alleged censorship by the established press and a desire to dismantle a conspiratorial 'deep state' – which she attributes her downfall to for the swift end of her calamitous premiership.

"The platform is not well-known beyond the pro-Trump media sphere, but it does have credibility there, mostly due to John Solomon, who gives commentary on pro-Trump shows like Bannon's 'War Room' podcast and has even spoken with the former president," commented Alex Hinton, who has closely studied the Maga movement.

A Divisive Associate

Truss's attempt to bring Maga media to the United Kingdom has aligned her more closely to controversial figures such as the journalist.

He established Just the News following backlash when allegations surfaced of pushing misleading narratives about the President's actions in Ukraine, as well as disputed reports about one-time diplomat to that country.

Solomon's reporting were amplified within the pro-Trump outlets, with Solomon serving as a frequent visitor on Sean Hannity's influential cable news broadcast. The former president personally endorsed his stories.

Solomon made the reports about Ukraine in a number of opinion pieces for the political newspaper the Hill, where he was re-designated as an opinion writer following internal criticism regarding his reporting. His narratives were pivotal in Trump's pressure for the officials in Kyiv to investigate Hunter Biden and his father in 2019. Those demands resulted in impeachment charges against the president. Senators later voted to acquit the president.

Weeks after Solomon left the publication in October 2019, the publication announced it was carrying out a examination of his columns relating to Ukrainian matters. It concluded he had relied on untrustworthy contacts and stated he "omitted crucial information about key Ukrainian sources, such as the fact that they had been charged or were being probed."

Entering the Ecosystem

The journalist's personal TV and radio guest spots are a indication of the conservative ecosystem Truss is becoming part of. He talked about his backing of the program on a broadcast he helps run on the right-wing channel, a conservative television outlet that is the base for the pro-Trump commentator ex-Trump strategist Bannon and on which Tucker Carlson also is seen. She has already hosted Bannon on one of her first podcasts.

In linking up with Solomon and Just the News, the former leader has become a small part in a much wider network of pro-Trump platforms that routinely amplify each other's content.

Solomon's own podcast and Real America's Voice show have repeatedly hosted personalities such as commentator Mike Benz, a political voice whose arguments against USAID was cited by Elon Musk as grounds for dismantling the international development organization.

A Cross-Border Foray

Although the former PM's unnatural presentation and political travails have been mocked in Britain, certain American analysts are taking seriously her efforts to rebrand as a local version of the pro-Trump media ecosystem.

"You have to take individuals such as her with seriousness, although you may not want to take them literally," stated a Democratic strategist, who served in the Biden administration.

"Observers witnessed how in 2024 Donald Trump used that media network to spread his narrative. Without a doubt that network exports and influences conversation internationally. It appears relatively clear to me that the conditions in the Britain are comparable to what allowed this parallel press sphere to flourish here."

a political theory expert, said the online conservative ecosystem was already exerting influence in Britain.

"Online platforms is borderless," Finlayson remarked. "There exists a sort of environment within which content circulates – at times appearing in harsh versions and occasionally in softer tones – but which is interlinked."

Hinton said the expansion of the digital conservative movement in the UK lately meant the "possibility to have a growing impact is significant."

A Transatlantic Ambition
