In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
